Know The Simplistic

Exclusive Elements

Of COLD ROOM

Dear FoodEnthupreneurs,

In my last blog I explained about the different types of Cold Rooms. In this session we will explore the different elements of today’s Walk-in-Cold Room

Walk in Cold Room: It is similar to our domestic refrigerator maintaining plus or minus temperature; the basic difference is we can walk inside the room.

Elements of Cold Room:

1.     Puff Panels: These are the main elements of Cold Room (CR) forming the body of the CR. Panels are made from PUF – polyurethane foam insulation filled inside the metal sheets. These generally come in various thickness depending on the temperature and the height of the CR. For normal Walk-In, the height is @ 8’ -10’. We can follow the below thumb* rule for panel thickness based on temperature range:

a)     For Temp. range +12 °C to +20 °C: 50 mm Thick Panel
b)    For Temp. range +1 °C to +10 °C: 60 mm Thick Panel
c)     For Temp. range -10 °C to -1 °C: 80 mm Thick Panel
d)    For Temp. range -10 °C to -20 °C: 100 mm Thick Panel
e)     For Temp. range -20 °C to -25 °C: 120 mm Thick Panel
f)      For Temp. range -25 °C to -40 °C: 150 mm Thick Panel

The Wall & Ceiling panels are available in 3 options: i) PPGI/PPGI (Pre-Painted Galvanized iron Sheet both side) ii) PPGI/SS (PPGI outside & inside SS – #304 – Please check the same from vendor) & iii) SS/SS (both side). In floor panels you can go for GI Panels, SS Panels, AL Chequered Plate Panels or Puf Slab & PCC Kota.

2.   Door: There are many kinds of Doors used in CR as per the use / propose and size of CR. Most commonly used doors are:

a)     Flush Type Swing Door
b)    Overlap Swing Door
c)     Sliding Door
d)    Double Leaf Flush Door

3.  Refrigeration System: Refrigeration system is the heart of the CR. They are unitary / split type. Now-a-days mostly Split Units are used because of better performance. In split unit, the evaporator extracts the heat from inside the CR & condensing units dissipate the heat in the atmosphere. Evaporators are slim / tapered / cubical type. Whereas condensing units are air cooled or water cooled with hermetic / scroll / semi-hermetic compressor. For multi-purpose commercial CRs, mostly rack system or inverter system is also used for power sawing.

4.   Controller: This unit controls the refrigeration and other functions in the CR. The temperature sensor senses the temperature and gives the feedback to controller, which then operates the outdoor & indoor unit. It also controls the Defrost in case of freezer.

So friends, we have seen in detail about the components of the Cold Room. It is always helpful to know the nitty-gritties of any system if you are using it. Of course, you do not need to know it in extreme detail, but at least to the extent that you can choose the best component suitable to your typical use. This knowledge would also help you to do preliminary trouble-shooting of your system breakdown till your service technicians arrive.

Hope this blog adds some value to you, and helps you in your business in some way. Do let me know about your views on this post. I would be happy to get your feedback and try to incorporate them in my next blog.

Till then, Eat Healthy, Serve Healthy!!
